What Should Be Stored in a Fire Cabinet

Fire Cabinet

A flammable storage cabinet is a type of cabinet specifically designed for storing combustible and flammable substances safely. Numerous laboratories, factories, cleaning companies, and even educational institutions work with materials considered dangerous or flammable regularly. There must be a place where they can securely and safely store those substances.

What Can Be Stored in a Fire Cabinet?

Here are the materials which should be stored in a fireproof storage cabinet:

Gases that are flammable

Gases like propane or methane can burn when exposed to heat, or an oxidant like oxygen, for example, will lead to fires or explosions.

Liquids that ignite and fuel fires

Diesel is a combustible liquid with a flashpoint of above 38°C. It will produce vapors that can ignite in higher temperatures. However, liquids such as acetone have a lower flashpoint and can produce vapors that can ignite at normal temperatures. Since these liquids may ignite, they need to be stored in a fire cabinet safely and securely to lower the risk of accidents and damage to property.

Solids that are flammable

An example of a flammable solid can be found in dye labs. It is called picrate salt. It reacts to friction and heat. So it is considered sensitive and dangerous. It is also used in making explosives. So it not only requires safe storage under controlled conditions but secured fire cabinet storage to ensure no unauthorized person can access it.

Oxidising chemicals

These are chemicals that can fuel flames thereby allowing fires to rapidly spread. Such dangerous chemicals need to be stored in a fire cabinet.

Explosive chemicals

These are the type of chemicals that must be kept away from sunlight, heat, and shock. They need to be handled with extreme care as they are highly dangerous.

Why Use a Fire Cabinet to Store Hazardous Substances?

Aside from keeping flammable materials and substances stored safely and securely, fireproof cabinets also help to:

Contain any leaks or spillage

Protect staff or visitors

Fire resistance gives employees time to safely evacuate

Prevent any unauthorized person from getting access to them

As you can see, a fire cabinet maintains safety within the workplace. It is a very effective means to minimize the risks of untoward accidents like fires and explosions that can be detrimental to life and property.
